Cassellberry — City Overview

The history of Casselberry is rooted in the planting of ferns. The city was named after fern grower Hibbard Casselberry, who came to the area in 1926, bought about 3,000 acres, and turned the city into one of the world's largest producers of ferns. From those beginnings, Casselberry has developed into a popular town for young couples with a population of more than 25,000.

Secret Lake, north of Lake Triplett in the center of the city, is popular for picnicking and boating. Wirz Park, on Mark David Boulevard, has a swimming pool, basketball courts, and a baseball field. Three city parks, Red Bug Lake Park, Secret Lake, and Wirz Park offer wholesome recreation. Red Bug Lake Park, a 50 acre retreat (with nature trails, lighted tennis, racquetball, basketball and softball field), has a small beach with boat ramps. Casselberry prides itself on having 18 beautiful lakes and a world-class dog racing facility. Parimutuel betters are attracted to the Seminole Greyhound Park and the Orlando/Seminole Jai-Alai, the world's fastest sport.

Casselberry residents are young (34 is the median age) and 65 percent are homeowners. The residential areas are mostly moderately priced homes that are popular with young families. Upscale condominium communities are a growing trend in the housing market, but single-family homes are still the preferred lifestyle in this area. Familiar neighborhoods include Carriage Hill, Howell Park, Wyndam Hills, and Indian Hills.

Casselberry has three elementary schools and one middle school.

Local Government

Casselberry's local government is run by a mayor-city manager and four commissioners.

The commissioner-manager system has an appointed city manager who is responsible for the daily operation of the city. The mayor and city commissioners serve three year terms.

Butler Plaza, Semoran Boulevard and Howell Branch Road - Contains over 30 specialty stores, plus Ross and a supermarket.

Home Shopping Club Outlet, State Road 436 - Contains Sam's Discount Store and numerous electronics stores.

Lake Howell Square Center, State Road 436 - Movie theaters, Wal-Mart, Border Cantina, 25 specialty stores.

Five to Ten minute drive to major area shopping malls: new mall at Tuscawilla, and the Altamonte Mall.
